Sitting on the Meadows

We’re sitting on the meadows enjoying the last of today’s summer sunshine and I felt the need to blog! I’m not really sure what about, I just want to blog.

A friend missed her train tonight so she’s in town for another day and two friends have told me there’s an all night party tonight which looks like it’s going to be wild. The last outdoor all night party we went to carried on as the sun rose and the last of our party survived till 2pm the following day, a record I hope to break tonight!

Edinburgh Protest Photos

I’ve just uploaded some pics from the Edinburgh protests, click here to have a look.

There are a selection, ranging from when I arrived in town around 7pm to 2am when we were in the Meadows playing with fire!

Travelling

I’m in a bit of a quandry at the moment. I’m debating whether to stay in Edinburgh (which is looking pretty unlikely), move to London (running a close second) or simply jack everything and hit the road. See where the wind blows me.

I’m drawn to London because I know people there, and I’ve met lots of people from London in the past few weeks. I could land and have an immediate network of friends and support. I’d have a place to stay to start with, some poeple to help me get on my feet, and so on. On the other hand, maybe that’s just the easy option. I’ve never really gone out entirely on my own to see what the world has to offer. It’s a huge place, I’ve only seen a tiny part, and perhaps I should try seeing more of it.

Any comments or feedback would be great, I’m taking lots of opinions before I make my final decision. I’ll probably escape to the hills this weekend and reach some sort of decision. I know one thing for sure, the status quo cannot continue.

Protesting in Gleneagles, Bombing in London

What a world we live in. Today, as you’ll probably have heard, several bombs were detonated on the London Underground and on a London bus. At least 2 people were reported as killed when I read the news earlier. Yesterday, I was in Gleneagles at the very front line of the protests, watching from the sidelines (quite literally) as the riot police clashed with the crowds.

It was an amazing experience, to see so many people having made the journey to Gleneagles to express something in the strongest possible way, through action. There were many causes being promoted, I think it would be generalising to say it was all against poverty and capitalism, although that was the main thrust. So many people, so positive about their beliefs, and a few people determined to fight with the police. Today, a group of people so convinced about their beliefs they chose to take the lives of others by bombing London.

Quite literally, yesterday it was protesting, today it’s bombing, what will it be tomorrow? Where will it end?

I can’t help but feel there’s a revolution coming. People are becoming more and more detached from humanity. Politicians make decisions which affect other countries, millions of people, and the voting public is not happy with their decisions. US / UK foreign policy is causing an awful lot of people to become very angry all over the world.

It may sound naive, but I think the world needs a lot more peace and love, and a lot less violence, a lot less enforcing of beliefs on others.

The fence is down

I’ve just realised that in all the shaking a large section of the fence closing the road has been pulled out. If there was a big push now, while the frontline would suffer at the hands of the riot police the crowd would undoubtedly break the lines and make it through. Through into what is anybody’s guess, but the potential is there…

The Frontline

Well I’ve made it to the frontline and it’s mainly a standing around affair. The police are on high alert, they’ve just torn down a fence in the garden they’re based in which sparked a few cries of “vandals” from the crowd. Other than that, there’s been some shaking of the front line fence, the usual lobbing of stuff over it. The highlight was probably the expert egging shot when the police photographer standing on the wall was hit diectly in the face. Great photo but I just missed it!

There’s talk in the crowd of preparing to break the fence down, but we’ll see what that leads to. There’s a lot of running around going on on the police side of the fencem but otherwise it’s pretty stable. More to follow…

Protesting at Gleneages

The rain is falling gently but persistently, the helicopters circle overhead, the locals are out spectating and the police are standing guard. I’m blogging this from the road (literally!) as I’m marching with the G8 protest from Auchterarder towards Gleneagles.

So far it’s been pretty badly organised, we’ve no idea where we’re going, and it took us three hours to get here, but the crowds are chanting, the songs are being sung, the police are on their best behaviour and everthing looks good for a peaceful protest.

We’ve heard third hand reports of trouble on Princes Street in Edinburgh, but communication is sporadic and between random people we’ve met over the past few days, so we’re not really sure what to make of it all. A friend reported courtesy of BBC that the 1pm march had been cancelled, but we knew nothing of it to begin with, then the report came in that it was back on. It’s now 3:05 and we’re definitely marching so something’s obviously on!

Stay tuned, more updates to follow…
