It’s a strange thing really, but people do associate worth with cost. Something is only really worth what it cost you to get it. Raymond (new window) reminded me of that with regards to my idea about sharing business ideas. What you give people for free, they don’t value as highly as what they work hard to get.
Suddenly, I realise why I’ve got to stop giving away my book for free, it’s human nature.
I got up at 6:30 this morning and went for a walk in Holyrood Park as the city was coming to life. The sun was just rising over the hills, and the city was coming to life. I spent about two hours taking a few photos and walking along the Crags.
It’s amazing, I forget how powerful physical space can be. The simple act of standing on a hill and watching the city below can bring such peace and calm. I was feeling quite flustered yesterday, and my short walk this morning has made a huge difference, I feel far more together and calm today.
Perhaps not directly, but yesterday’s Monday Morning Message (new window) from Bruce Rector was on the same very subject, finding a quiet space to sit and be alone every day. It’s a funny old world…
I was driving up to the Isle of Skye on Thursday and took the opportunity to listen to a book on CD that I had been given probably a year ago now. The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle (new window).
The book is a real inspiration, I’m going to buy a paper copy to be able to scan through to remind myself of some of the points. It talks about the path to spiritual enlightenment, and makes some very real, very true points.
As an example, Tolle explains that the majority of us build our sense of self on our external attributes. Our possessions, our wealth, our job or position, even our thoughts. He goes on to explain that we are not our thoughts, that we are in fact addicted to thinking, we believe we cannot stop thinking.
It has had a powerful effect on me, and I’m keen to listen to the rest of the book. It’s currently selling for less than £7 on Amazon (new window) and I’d strongly recommend it to anyone interested in finding happiness.
I’m sitting on the crags watching the sun rise over Edinburgh this morning, and ideas are flooding to me thick and fast. There’s clearly too many for me to pursue single handedly, which has sparked another idea upon which I’d like to invite your opinion.
In the words of Thomas Alva Edison “Genius is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration”, a mentality in which I’m a great believer. They say each person has four truly revolutionary ideas in their life, how many of these are actually brought to fruition?
Well my idea today is to create a forum in which to share these ideas, freely, without royalty, on the basis that what goes around comes around. A similar thing takes place at Beermatting events (www.beermatting.com) where ideas + beer = beermatting. My slant is more web based, with the focus on discussion and proliferation of ideas. An entrepreneur’s inspiration board if you like.
Firstly, what is your initial gut reaction? Please be as open, frank and honest as you can. Secondly, do you know of any other forums where this may already be happening? Thirdly, is it something you would choose to participate in?
Have a terrific Tuesday,
Callum.

Yee haa ride ‘em cowboy, I am the man, the daddy, the number one, or in the words of Mr Ali himself, I am the greatest!
Search on Google.com for callum macdonald (new window) and yours truly is the numero uno, the top result, the mac daddy, oh yes, oh yes, oh yes.
Number 5 on Google.co.uk unquoted (new window) and number 4 quoted (new window).
If you’re wondering why this is such an achievement, try searching for my brother Fergus Macdonald (new window) or mum Vera Macdonald (new window). Their web sites, despite being their own names dot com, are nowhere to be seen. Add to that the fact that there are some 60′000 results that I’m competing against.
It is a glorious day, and a day for celebration I say…
