Phoneless

Alas, I managed to lose not only my own phone but also Roland’s phone on Saturday night. A simple case of forgetful stupidity, I didn’t have the phones in my pocket and left them in the taxi when I got out. Darnit.

Anyway, for those of you who have my Thai number, I have a new number, which I’ve actually had for a couple of days (hence I was using Roland’s phone while he’s in Burma). It’s unlikely I’ll be able to get the original number back, so if you don’t get an email with my new number, I’ve probably forgotten about you and a gentle reminder wouldn’t hurt! :)

My First Surfer

My first couch surfer is due to arrive tonight! 24 year old Lorenzo (new window) from Italy is due to call me when he gets to Bangkok.

I signed up with CouchSurfing.com (new window) on Monday and on Tuesday I got my first contact, sweet! In order to become a verified member I need to first be verified by three people who have met me in person, in the flesh, in more than just passing. So hopefully this evening I will acquire my first verification!

Fear not, I shall keep thee posted…

Personal Homepages

Thanks to this article from Itchy Hands (new window), I found a fantastic web site called protopage to create your own personalised homepage.

Protopage is great, you can have all sorts of cool stuff like the weather, a few pictures, some news feeds, your email inbox, and a whole heap of other cool stuff. Personal homepages have taken off since Google launched their service, but if like me, you’re a little bit concerned about just how much Google knows about you, it’s great to know there are other services out there.

Not only that, Protopage lets you move all your stuff around on your homepage, now that’s just cool. It’s also AJAX based which means it loads super quick. Check out their demo page:

Then go get one for yourself at protopage.com (new window).

Committing to Bangkok

The last few weeks have been filled with a debate as to whether I stay in Bangkok or get the hell out of here for somewhere more civilised (or Australia, one of the two! ;)). Well, at long last, a decision has been reached, I’m going to stay put for a while yet, at least another 6 months or a year.

I’m finally starting to find a groove here, meeting a few more interesting people as time goes on. Not only that, work is going well and from next month I’ll be earning real money, so that’ll be a welcome change.

For all my complaints about Bangkok, the quality of life for farrangs (foreigners) here is pretty good. I have a maid who cleans my apartment for £8 ($12 US) a month, I don’t own a single pot or pan, I take taxis just about everywhere unless there’s traffic, and from next month, I’ll be making some money by UK standards, good money by Thai standards.

So, an open invitation, for those of you not on couchsurfing.com (new window), I have a sofa to offer to anyone planning a trip to Bangkok. Time to put the excuses aside, book the flights, and get yourselves out here to visit!
