What a Stinker!

Oooh, this one’s just brilliant. An unknown individual sent a long lost love letter to a biographer writing a book about the poet John Betjeman. The biographer, one A.N. Wilson, then included this letter in his book. It was brought to his attention after the publication of the book, that the first letter of every sentence in the letter spells “A.N. Wilson is a shit.”

Oh la la, can you imagine the patience required, hoping dearly it would be published, rushing to the book shop on the day of it’s release, and then, finally, the rejoice. I think I’d laugh for days… :)

Thanks to the chaps over at Freakonomics for this little gem (new window).

Sobering Stuff

It’s easy to feel like one’s own life is hard. If you find yourself in need of a little perspective, head over to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s page on death row (new window). I found the women on deathrow (new window) page particularly sobering.

There are currently 10 women on death rown in Texas, according to the site. Of these 10 women awaiting execution in Texas, 4 were younger than I am now when they were convicted of their crimes. Two girls were sentenced to execution for crimes they committed at 19 years old, one at 20, one at 23 and one at 26. It’s a frightening thought to consider that at 19 years old you’ve made mistakes for which your peers are prepared to sentence you to death.

I can’t help but feel it somewhat makes a mockery of the idea of restitution.

Tall People are Smarter…

… according to this recent paper published by Anna Case and Christina Paxson (new window). Thanks to the chaps over at Freakonomics (new window) for bringing this to my attention in their recent blog post (new window).

You really do have to love the internet for bringing little gems like this to one’s attention. I think I’m going to carry a copy of this paper with me wherever I go!

Ahh, come on, argue with me shorty, go on, argue… :)

Beach Life

After something like 6 or 7 months in Bangkok, living in Thailand, I’m going to the beach! We’re off to Koh Samet, a popular Thai getaway, for a couple of take it easy days. We’ll see if that’s how it works out or not, but that’s the plan anyway!

Fear not, pictures of beautiful white sands are on the way… :)

Linux Gameboy Anyone?

GP2XCheck out the GP2X (new window), it’s a Linux based handheld game playing / movie watching / music listening device. A little like Sony’s PSP, but cheaper and more expandable. Admittedly it doesn’t have the range of games available that the PSP does, but there are lots of free games, and it’s open source, what could be cooler than that?

Top of my shopping list for those of you at home feeling flush with your British pounds and thinking of me fondly here in Thailand with my poor Thai bahts… :)

Don’t mess with Thai women

A a recent article in that well known international publication, The Scotsman (new window), might make you think twice about messing with a Thai lady. Or with her family and friends for that matter. Particularly if they’re drinking whisky at the time! Find out why here (new window)..

Broadband in Bed!

For the first time in Bangkok, I have broadband in bed! The wireless router used to be at the other side of the building from my apartment, the signal was strong enough to reach my living room but not my bedroom. Now the router is in my living room, so I have broadband everywhere!

It’s amazing the things one can do with the internet in one’s bed… ;-)
