I saw my first Thai soldiers today. Yes, the military is more than just nominally in town, there are soldiers posted at the major junctions in Bangkok. To be honest, they looked like kids bored waiting around for nothing to happen, but they were carrying some big ass guns!
Things seem to have settled down here. I read that something like 83% of Thais support the coup. It looks like Thaksin has taken the hint, he’s no longer welcome in Thailand. Hopefully that should calm things down a bit. As always, you can rely on me, your humble servant, to bring you the latest from the front lines…
Yes, there is a military coup going on right now in Thailand. I haven’t seen any military vehicles yet myself, but apparently they’re at all the major junctions. I’m facing something of a dilemna because, as it happens, I have a flight to London at 18:25 today. I wasn’t planning to use the ticket, I’m not planning to go home, but it might not be a bad idea in light of the coup.
It seems to be business as usual here in Bangkok, buses are running, shops are open, and so on. So for anyone worried, I’m ok!
My brother (new window) has been hassling me for a few weeks now, asking me how to get Microsoft Windows to start automatically when he turns on his laptop, instead of Fedora Linux. I’ve been telling him that it’s a bit like asking me to buy him a gun so he can shoot himself. However, in spite of my concern for his electronic welfare, today I caved. Today I decided if he wants to shoot himself, he must learn the consequences for himself. This morning, with a heavy heart, I sent him the instructions.
Linux loses a user today. But more than that, the principles of free software lose a user today. It’s a sad day in Bangkok this morning.
At about 5:30 this morning, slightly under the influence of alcohol, Fergus (new window) left my apartment in Bangkok for most likely the last time. He’s finally going home! After almost 16 months away from home, a year in Singapore, and a whole heap of adventures around Asia, he’s begun his long journey back to his mammy!
It’ll take him something ridiculous like 6 days in total to get home, between the various stops en-route, but in just about a week, he’ll be back in his own bed, enjoying mum’s glorious cooking (stock up on pasta Mum!) and seeing old friends. Good luck bro.
As you can see, he was travelling light…
