The View

This really is the view from the corner of our balcony…

I Made It

My flight landed at about 1am, I figured it was a good time to start hitchiking. I made it to the outskirts of Christchurch at about 2:30am, I needed a ride. It’s 6 degrees, I’m wearing almost every piece of clothing I own and I’m still freezing cold. I really needed a ride. I watched the sun rise about seven thirty.

I really, really, really needed a ride. I got a ride at 8:30am, I only waited 6 hours, not too bad.

I forget the guy’s name who picked me up, but we had a great chat about all sorts of things. He took me a slightly different route towards Nelson. Instead of going straight up the coast we turned left and headed cross country over Lewis Pass.

Then the snow started. I wasn’t looking forward to getting out of the nice warm car and back into the cold, cold, cold New Zealand weather… :( By the time we got to Springs Junction, where we parted company, the weather had cleared up a bit.

Initially I was pleased, only another 214Kms to go…

New Zealand Christchurch Hitching 214K to Nelson

The the rain started again, lightly at first… After an hour and a half standing in the pouring rain, I’d had enough. Drivers kept waving at me, by the end I was screaming “Do you see the rain? This is not fun. Give me a lift…” but it was no use. I retreated to the cafe on the corner and ran into Rhianna who was going to Nelson. Score, I had my final lift.

A few hours later I was ready to go to bed. My first hitch hike, 425Kms in a total of about 16 hours. Where are we going tomorrow? :)

Flight to Christchurch Booked

On Tuesday 13 March at 16:35 my little wings will set sail from Melbourne’s fair shores and depart for a land of the north, namely Sydney, where I shall rest only for a few minutes before again defying gravity and propelling myself over the seas to New Zealand. Yes, ladies and gentleman, the Mac is leaving the building. I am going to New Zealand! :)

I’m a Top Coder!

I just signed off another project today on RentACoder.com (new window) and made the Top Coder award. I’m rated in the top 3% of the 170,328 coders on the site. Check out my profile (new window).

What happened on 9/11?

No, not the day democracy died in Cuba, not that 9/11. September 11th 2001, the day the twin towers in New York City collapsed, apparently because two planes were crashed into them, allegedly by terrorists. The astute will have picked up the scepticism in my tone!

Having just watched Loose Change 2nd Edition (new window), I have to say I’m very sceptical. When you stop and think about it, the idea that a plane crashes into the upper floors of a building and then destroys the building 54 minutes later, in what appeared to be a perfectly controlled demolition, well it does sound a bit ridiculous doesn’t it?

The film can be downloaded for free, so go ahead, see what all the fuss is about, ask questions. It scared the hell out of me.

Grand Prix Tickets

Two free tickets for the Melbourne Grand Prix were at stake. All Ross had to do was walk like a supermodel, he’s the tall lad that went first. The kid who went third ended up winning in the dance off, but sadly I didn’t catch that on video! Check it out…

New Zealand Me Thinks

I think I’m going to hop on a plane next week and boost over to the New Zealand CouchSurfing Collective (new window). My plan is still to have no plan, but I reckon I’ll hang out there for a few weeks, see how things pan out, then probably get a Working Holiday Visa for Australia and head back to Melbourne for a while. Might stop through Sydney though, that could be fun!
