A Linux Smartphone

Tech E2881 Linux SmartphoneI had this great idea that I’d love a Linux based smart phone. I figured somebody had to have thought of this first, and so a little scroogling (new window) later I found the E2881 (new window). It looks almost like a Treo (minus the aerial) and yet it runs on Linux. How uber-cool is that?

Unfortunately my birthday is just passed, but if anyone’s feeling super guilty about having forgotten, I absolutely will forgive you if you buy me one of these!

Awesome Autism

This is a pretty amazing video. Stephen Wiltshire, Kunst Savant Aus London (damned unfortunate title that one!) spends three days drawing a five foot aerial portrait of Rome having spent only 45 minutes in a helicopter viewing the city. The document is near perfect, his rendition of the Colosseum is practically identical when overlaid on a photograph of the real thing. That’s deeply awesome!

A New Look

My site is getting an upgrade! I’m going to K2 (new window), that’s a technical thing, not the big nasty mountain, no, I’m not going there. It’ll be all super cool and Ajaxy among other things.

If you find any bugs, anything that’s broken, anything that you think is bad, then please let me know. Likewise, if you’re just overwhelmed with the joy of the new image, then please do share the fun.

Review: Shooter

I saw Shooter (new window) last night. Overall, I thought it was a great movie. It’s a typical action / thriller / conspiracy film, some interesting plot turns. There’s a great scene where the dog gets him a beer from the fridge, almost makes me think about getting a dog! :)

It’s not a clever film, if you’re one of those movie buff types you might not like it, but I found it entertaining and enjoyable.

CouchSurfing.com is Back

CouchSurfing.com is back online after almost 20 hours of down time.

This downtime was especially frustrating for a number of reasons.

1) It was unannounced. Even on the public developers list, there was no forewarning of the upgrade. No doubt travellers were left stranded while the site was down for almost a full day.

2) It clearly wasn’t planned well enough. There are so many willing and skilled volunteers who could have helped with this upgrade, if it weren’t for CouchSurfing’s ludicrous NDA.

I warmly encourage you to take action now, join the campaign, sign the petition.

Birthdays in Bangkok

I celebrated my second consecutive birthday in Bangkok yesterday. As is my usual custom, I took the day off work and instead attended to a few personal administration issues. First on the agenda, it was getting very out of control…

Thailand Bangkok Birthday Haircut 2007

Then I wandered by Lumpini Park for a little jaunt in the swan shaped pedal boats. I’ve seen the next scene countless times in the park, but it never fails to bring a smile to my face…

Alas I couldn’t bring myself to participate, I just wasn’t wearing the right brand of spandex, but maybe next time! :)

OpenCouchSurfing Goes Live

I’m delighted to announce the launch of The OpenCouchSurfing Campaign. I fully support the campaign, I believe that CouchSurfing very much needs to embrace openness and transparency. It’s been a week or so in the making, and today is the culmination of our preparations. The word is out. Vive la revolucion!
