@<a href="http://www.callum-macdonald.com/2008/06/06/a-vision-for-lonely-planet/#comment-28123" rel="nofollow">Fergy</a>: I did not know that. Interesting. I wasn't aware that the BBC was such a commercial enterprise. I wonder how that'll play out. Very interesting.

True, the cost of print on demand hasn't come down as far as it will do. But even if Lonely Planet were printing monthly, they'd still be doing considerable volume. So I'd guess the cost would be somewhere between mass production and print on demand.

I agree with your concept and online content providers like TripAdvisor have only just started to explore this.

For me the key problem with Print on Demand (POD) is that it's still damn expensive. You won't be able to produce a 200 page guide book for GBP 6.99.

Many believe that ebook readers are the bridge between this gap. However, for many travellers, you simply can't beat a real book.

Interesting points...would definitely be a better service. My current LP for SE Asia is 2 years out of date, and as such...it's fairly useless for hotels and restaurants (which may or may not still be there), all prices are out of date, and of course, there's no user reviews - just the viewpoint of one person who visited the hotel/restaurant sometime in the last 5 years!
