Trying a new theme

I’m trying a new theme on the blog. I’m going for a lighter, simpler look more focused on the content and less on the blog. What do you think?

  1. I agree with alex’s comment, a light texture wouldn’t be a bad idea. Not sure what to suggest though.

  2. Thanks for the feedback. I’ll think about a light background. Might ask a designer friend to work her magic. πŸ™‚

James, the twitter posts are now appearing directly in the blog, so I dropped the twitter widget.

  3. Not so keen on the new theme…think it could definitely do with a designers touch. Saw a really nice white theme the other day – very simple like this, but just had a slightly different touch.

I also feel somewhat confused about the integration of twitter and posts – i think the two are fundamentally different. Twitter is about updating your current status, posts are you writing an article on something you’ve done, seen, experienced, etc. The two don’t necessarily read together, and as such, i feel it would be better to have them separated: perhaps ‘posts’, and ‘updates’.

User’s insight: i read your posts, but i don’t read your twitters and feel they get in the way of your posts. I’m not so bothered about knowing what you’re doing every 2-6 hours, but i do want to read what you take the time to sit down and write.

Hope this is constructive and helpful.

  4. To add to my last post, after having a look around, i think this theme is definitely laid out a bit better than before.

The 2 columns appear less busy, and the use of the tab-bar tidy things up a lot. However, some tabs have drop-downs, some don’t – that’s a bit strange. Also, think that you could use a softer colour when you hover over the blog name – red is quite bright.

Your previous theme also had a lot of cool features – the navigation links that stayed at the top of the screen when you scroll down and active search to name but two.

So, in conclusion, a bit of old, a bit of new and i think you’ll be spot on!

    PS
The white theme that i saw is called Hemingway New, i’ll email you it – might be worth checking out.

  5. Hi Callum,

Just sent Fergus some info about the Hemingway Theme which is pretty nice, Comes in both White and Black… Although I sent an upgraded one also which allows for widgets (The old one used ‘Blocks’ which look interesting from a coding point of view!) The new one also has a ‘japanese blossom’ colour scheme if your suitably confident in yer masculinity πŸ™‚

    Peace to cats.

  6. Ferg, some interesting ideas. That floating navigation on the K2 theme is nice. I may see about integrating that.

I’m not sure I agree about the integration of status updates into the flow of content. I like it that way. I think it creates a flow of content. I may even cut the post bodies so that they’re just summaries, then you can click into the post if you like.

I wonder how that works in an RSS reader. Hmm.

I’m thinking to offer custom RSS subscriptions so you can tune out posts you don’t want (mum can ignore the Techy category for example) and only see the posts you do want. In that case, you’d be able to ignore Status Updates if you wanted to.

    Thanks for sharing your feedback.

Ian, thanks for sending on the theme, I’ll check it out.
