I had a similar problem. So I decided that rather than have 500+ friends on Facebook, I would cut it down to my most important 150 friends. And even then, I would hide the news feeds of friends who consistently post crap.

As for Twitter, I stopped following anyone who over-tweets. I really have no interest in reading "tweet diarrhea".

Re: exhaustion -- long post + tight margins = lots of scrolling. :)

As for Philtro, I'd be happy to give you a beta invite. The only "catch" is that I'd ask that you provide some feedback since we're constantly improving the rating algorithms, UI, etc. If you're interested, feel free to drop me an email and I'll send an invite out immediately.

Thanks for sharing. As with Raymond, what led you to feel exhaustion?

As I mentioned in my respond to Raymond, removing myself is not really a solution. I lose both the noise and the signal. I'll be interested to see what you are doing at philtro. :-)

Thanks for the feedback. What leads you to you feel exhaustion?

I'm not sure resigning is a viable solution. One could "resign" from email for example, but the loss would most likely outweigh the gain. Getting rid of all non-essential friends on Facebook is also not really a solution. I want to keep in touch with those people, just not as intensively as I want to keep in touch with others. It's not so much of a black and white issue as a grayscale challenge. I want more info from some people and less from others.

I'm with Raymond... I'm exhausted from reading this one too. :)

Raymond makes a good point, you could always choose to exclude yourself or take measures to reduce your social network "presence" to improve the signal to noise ratio... but I don't see that as a viable long term strategy. Regardless of the solution, I think you're touching on a very important subject that affects thousands, even millions, of people.

There need to be more tools that serve as personal noise filters. "Show me more of the stuff I'm interested in and filter the rest out" -- sort of like the Gmail spam folder.

Disclaimer: We're building one at Philtro (and I'm the founder).

Phew....I'm exhausted just reading it.

So, resign from twitter. Boot out anyone on Facebook you don't want and let the rest know what your terms are for contacting you. Create a "true friends and family only" email account. Step back from it for a while. Be the change you want to see.
