Scottish Water in Hong Kong

I went water shopping this morning. It’s 4 or 5 flights of stairs to the ground, so we drew straws as to who would make the trip. I got to the supermarket and began comparing the $9 bottles of water with the $5 bottles (Hong Kong dollars that is, otherwise that’s just crazy expensive!).

To my delight, the $9 bottle said “Product of Scotland”. So in preparation for going home I bought two six-packs of 2L bottles for the great value price of only $66. A little taste of home in preparation for my return on Friday!

Refreshing Thailand

I find that nothing encourages me to shower more quickly than a refreshingly chilled stream of water descending from the shower head. Yes, enjoying the health benefits of a nice cool shower in the morning I find I’m showering in record time these days. Beautiful Thailand… :)

Awesome Autism

This is a pretty amazing video. Stephen Wiltshire, Kunst Savant Aus London (damned unfortunate title that one!) spends three days drawing a five foot aerial portrait of Rome having spent only 45 minutes in a helicopter viewing the city. The document is near perfect, his rendition of the Colosseum is practically identical when overlaid on a photograph of the real thing. That’s deeply awesome!

Birthdays in Bangkok

I celebrated my second consecutive birthday in Bangkok yesterday. As is my usual custom, I took the day off work and instead attended to a few personal administration issues. First on the agenda, it was getting very out of control…

Then I wandered by Lumpini Park for a little jaunt in the swan shaped pedal boats. I’ve seen the next scene countless times in the park, but it never fails to bring a smile to my face…

Alas I couldn’t bring myself to participate, I just wasn’t wearing the right brand of spandex, but maybe next time! :)

Crazy Kiwis

That’s gotta be a bummer when you wake up with a hangover and go looking for your car…

Nomadicness

While reading something on the internet the other day, I came across the concept of a modern day nomad. What a great word. Nomadic. It struck me that it pretty much sums up my life at the moment. I’m nomadic. I don’t exactly travel, I’ve hardly been to a tourist site in the last year. But I don’t stay in one place either. I’m not on holiday, I work, but I don’t work in one place.

So I reckon I’m a nomadic developer, although that sounds pretty geeky. I was thinking about the word entrepreneur, but it has all these weird connotations I reckon. So I think I’ll stick to nomad. I’m a nomad. Or for the Scots, am nae mad ken.

Cat Training

I’m living in a house with a cat…

So I thought I’d take this opportunity to try some animal experimentation. I’ve been arguing recently that animals have the same basic emotions as humans, love and fear. My motivation was more to play devil’s advocate than anything else, but it strikes me that this cat provides an interesting testing ground.

So, if you have any suggestions of experiments I could try, please let me know. Note: I use the term experimentation loosely. So animal rights activists, relax, I’m not going to microwave the cat. Animal abusers, take your suggestions elsewhere, I’m not going to microwave the cat. Harm free suggestions only. For example, could I train the cat to ignore me during the working day, but come say hello at 6pm exactly? Oh the possibilities…
