Hi,

I have experienced a very poor services with Fusemail products. A few things, since the time they promise to change any further approach to their system, it's a lie! First of all, their Sales Representatives are foolish! They promise almost everything to you and please you as much possible, but it turn to be negative when you try to leave their services. For now, I am relief that I am no longer dealing with the company. As this is possibly the worst "Nightmare" ever to be waken up!

"They take your money, and than lie about how excellent their products and services offered by them" Its a pain to hear the truth! Well, the truth will show! Wait! It is showing! LOL! The more the company covers the truth about they system malfunctioning, it will one day release the "Ugly Head" and than go bankrutpy without knowing what happen!

If I was the CEO in J2Global (the parent company of Fusemail), I will close down Fusemail first and run some other company that does work! Like probably "TuffMail" or even some other Mail products that actually works. At least make it 40% working and functional product!
Think it through! Plan head in the future endeavors! Release Fusemail, permanently or temporary for now, or else the pain will reveal soon!

No no, you don't pay money to get back on the yellow brick road! It's exactly like you say: the point is to risk money that is paid only if you deviate from your yellow brick road. http://beeminder.com/money has the nitty-gritty on that.

We're convinced that it's drastically better than StickK for the kinds of goals that you can graph. For binary goals (you did it or you didn't) I think StickK is still better.

The real advantage of Beeminder over StickK is that you retain more flexibility, because the commitment is based on your actual data and you can change your commitment as you go. That sounds like it defeats the point of a commitment contract but the catch is that there's always a one-week delay before changes take effect.

This video might help: http://dreev.es/howtobee

Do let me know if it's still confusing; that's really valuable feedback for us.

Beeminder seems complicated. I looked at the front page, and the about page. What's all this yellow brick road business? Do I get to fail once before I get charged? I'm confused. It sounds like if I go off the "road" I can pledge money to get back on. That doesn't sound like stickk at all. The point is to pledge money upfront, to pass a point of no return, to lock myself into a commitment. But maybe I'm not "getting" beeminder.

Ooh, if you like StickK and you happen to be a data nerd then you'll adore Beeminder.com -- it's like StickK but more visual: keep all your data points on a "yellow brick road" to your goal.

According to <a href="http://www.gsmarena.com/network-bands.php3?sCountry=COSTA+RICA" title="GSM / UMTS band information for Costa Rica and other countries" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">this page</a> it's GSM 1800 and UMTS 850. I know I had to get an additional phone while I was there because many "quad band" phones were at the time only GSM quad band, not UMTS (3G) quad band, and in Costa Rica, there's UMTS reception in many places where there is not GSM reception. So I recommend a 3G phone that supports the UMTS 850 band. With the usual disclaimer that I know nothing, it's all on you, etc, etc. :-)

I figured out to control how Ubuntu launches URLs. In Preferences->Main Menu->Internet the "Firefox Web Browser" that was put there by the system determines how Ubuntu launches URLs. I changed it to xterm and clicking a link opens an xterm. You can rename and move that item, and it still performs the same function.

So you do not want to change the command for that one. What I did was change the name of that one to "Firefox (preferred application)", changed the icon, and moved it further down the list. I added a new entry called "Firefox" and set the command to "start_firefox -P default %u".

Now everything is working like it used to work.

Hi Callum,

Just started using your plugin (v.0.9.1) but running into a (small) problem.
Although I succeed in sending mails via Google SMTP, the 'From Email' value is always ignored (either the default value or an entered value), the 'From Name' however does seem to work. I therefore always receive the mails from the username used for authentication.
Any thoughts on this behaviour?

Thanks in advance.

I looked into this site: http://ex4u.org/yes_one_sim.php As mentioned by another post, but they charge an EXTRA .46 cents per minute for calls to US so avoid that SIM card.

I am taking my IPad and downloaded Textfree app from Pinger that allows for free texting and incoming calls with local US number so family from home can stay on touch. So if you have WiFi, you're good to go.

Interesting. I've done some experimenting. Calling <code>`firefox http://url/`</code> will always open a new tab with the link. However, when the first firefox instance is started with --no-remote, clicking a link appears to launch <code>`firefox --no-remote http://url/`</code> which will not work. The --no-remote flag cannot be used with a url if firefox is already running. I'd guess this bug lies somewhere with Ubuntu's method of sending urls, but that's something I know nothing about. Maybe there's a way to modify that.

Thanks for posting your script. I'll start firefox without --no-remote for the first profile by hand, I always start it from the run prompt anyway. Good to know there is a solution, thank you kindly.

Using the cell phone with a pre-paid Costa Rican calling card, obtainable almost anywhere.

There are three different calling cards in Costa Rica. These are the 199, 198 and the 197. With the 197 pre-paid calling card, the language used is English, while the other two are Spanish responses.

There is a scratch off on the cards that reveal a PIN code. When you dial 197, you will be asked to enter the PIN. Next you will hear a response as to the amount of money in Colones left on the card. Next you will be asked to enter the number you want to call, as in the USA: 001-303-555-1212. Next you will hear a calculation as to the time left on the card with this connection diald.

I wrote a little script to work around the problem. Save the script somewhere in your PATH as start_firefox. Then change your menus to call start_firefox instead of firefox and remove the -no-remote.

For example: start_firefox -P work %u

Here is the script:

#!/bin/sh

running=`pgrep -x firefox`
if [ -n "$running" ]; then
    firefox -no-remote $@ &
else
    firefox $@ &
fi

Paris to Tangier? Is that Ryanair's idea of flying from Scotland to Morocco?! Plus, I'm guessing the fuel cost to drive a camper van from Paris to Edinburgh would exceed the cost of any flight.

Yeah, also interesting to hear that you feel the majority of comments about it were negative.

I certainly questioned the matching issue (as you well know) and I'm not sure that I agree with your opinion on it - although I've not read about the universalization test. I think I was looking more at what I had understood you said you were going to do, and then seeing something which I understood as different to that. Interesting to read you feel that the Movember matching was somewhat of a cop-out, I guess perhaps I thought it was but felt you didn't.

However, that aside, I think what you did was truly remarkable. I'm aware that you spent an enormous amount of time and energy on the task and I think that what you achieved was staggering.

I think that this is an example of you making a decision based on ethical or moral reasons to do something very difficult, and perhaps people may find that hard to understand and possibly react negatively as a result.

I think that the sacrifices you've made in the last year are amazing and I salute you for being an inspiration to me and hopefully others.

Thanks for your feedback and for the (mostly) kind words. I'll leave the subject of narcissism as a matter of opinion.

I don't think I agree with your argument about counting matched donations. If we're taking the <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/johnpell/PHIL116/universalization%20test.html" title="The Universalisation Test" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">universalisation test</a>, I think it's only reasonable to consider the full impact. If every person gave £1 for every £1 they spent, I don't think it would much matter if people counted matching donations.

Plus, my objective was to match my spending with charitable contributions. In all the cases where my donations were matched, I think it's reasonable to assume that those matching donations would not have been made were it not for my donation. A person who encourages others to give money by fundraising doesn't fit into the same category in my mind. Especially in the case of professional fundraising, which I'd guess most of it is.

Interesting that you say negative commentary was so common! What were the comments (or type of comments)? Was criticism truly of the fact that you gave money to charity? or was it criticism of the method; or maybe the narcissistic way in which you may have reported it?

I find it hard to believe people would criticise true altruism. I certainly don't and congratulations on a great achivement!

To balance that view I would disagree that you should include matched donations in your own balance sheets: across the population that's just double-counting (since no doubt Mark Shuttleworth counts the £1 he gave also). Put another way, you talk of 'generation' rather than 'giving' - but should a fundraiser say they gave £1,000,000 to charity just because they convinced the general public to collectively do so?

I'd say be proud of what you achieved, and don't devalue it by blowing your trumpet on the back of other peoples' commitments to bolster your efforts. They did what they did. You did what you did, and that (as far as I'm concerned at any rate) is a wonderful thing.

Hi Callum

I appreciate your work on this.. Trying to get this working on HostGator VPS, and getting could not connect error. I am investigating php settings, and I was wondering if you had a phpinfo page on a working host I could compare to mine to help troubleshoot this.
thx for any help!

Thanks for the info. I found some very cheap flights with Ryanair, as little as £25 from Paris to Tangier. I'll probably fly out and return to Paris. Probably then drive the campervan my dad has given me up to Edinburgh for a little while late Feb / early April. Might stop in to see you guys en-route if you'll be in town. Will let you know closer to the time, everything very much undecided at this point. You know me! :-)

The biggest problem for me with unity is the switch to application focus instead of task focus. For my job, I have 10 workspaces and I usually have 30 or more terminals open, 1-4 per task I am working on. With Unity (and gnome 3) all the terminals are combined into one and I cannot keep track of what I am doing.

The error does happen with only one firefox open.

Likewise, I'm really not a fan of Unity. I like the ideas, but in 12.04 alpha, much of it is still pretty ropey. The run dialog, for example, don't even get me started! I didn't notice this behaviour before upgrading, and I'm pretty sure I was running FF 8 or higher. It could be tested in a VM running an older Ubuntu / Firefox, see if it arises at a certain point. Does the same behaviour occur if only one instance is running?

I'm still running Ubuntu 11.04 (I HATE Unity), and my Firefox is version 8.0. I'm guessing the update to 8.0 is when the problem showed up.

I have noticed the very same thing in the last couple of days since I upgraded to Precise (12.04). I wonder if it's a bug in the new version of Firefox, I'm now on 10.0 since upgrading. If you find a solution, please do post it here or let me know. I'll do likewise. No doubt at some point (once I iron out the other bugs!) I'll get round to look into into it. :-)

I've been using this for years on Ubuntu. Until recently, clicking a link in Evolution or using "Open Link" from a right click on an URL opened the page in the first Firefox that I opened. Recently, in the past month or so, I get the "Firefox is already running, but not responding" error. My setup is unchanged, but Firefox has been updated.

Anyone else see this? Anyone found a workaround?

Thanks!

Wow, I had never noticed that before, that's definitely a bug, thanks for sharing. I've updated the plugin to use get_option('home') instead of siteurl. May I credit you with a link in the changelog?

Thanks so much for the plugin! I did make one change because I normally install WordPress in a subdirectory. In the default redirect, I changed

get_option('siteurl')

to

get_bloginfo('url');

Thanks, again!

Yeah It is possible. Actually this was mentioned in the link which you provided. So I would like you to thank you again. :)
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Command_line_arguments

"If you regularly wish to start your application using command line arguments then you can also create a shortcut on your Desktop which includes them. To do this, right-click on an open space of the desktop and choose "New -> Shortcut". Follow the wizard to create the new shortcut. When it prompts you for location (not name), type the file path and file name followed by the command line arguments, exactly as in the example above. "

Thank you for the amazing tutorial. I really needed this.

Is this possible to add the shortcut to the desktop instead of doing this every time?
On Windows click Start > Run then:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -no-remote -P "secondprofilename"

Write a script to edit a blog post. Interesting, hadn't thought about it...

A full upgrade isn't all that big, but only copying a few files seems like a far more elegant solution. Admittedly, I don't remember ever waiting for an upgrade to copy, so maybe it's all the same. My bigger concern is cleaning up old files that have been removed from WordPress. I don't have a mechanism to do that. Any ideas?

I think contact form 7 integrates already. Otherwise, search the entire source code for occurrences of mail(). This regex might work <code>/mail\s*(/</code> for you.

:) A couple of things:

1. You'll "try" ?! Surely to a man of your calibre it's trivial to write a script to do that for you ;)
2. Since when was a full WP upgrade more than a few seconds anyway? Is there something I don't know?

Callum, thank you for the plugin. I was a bit nervous about the 'no support' disclaimer (btw, reading some of the comments here I can see why you'd say that); however I've just installed the plugin, followed the instructions, and it works just fine.

So, for people struggling to make the plugin work, here's what I did: Use the Twenty Ten theme - I had troubles using other themes. Load a selection of .jpg images sized 940×198 pixels into a directory/folder called 'header-images' located just inside the wp-content directory/folder. Install and activate the plugin. View your site's pages/posts. If the images are 'sticking' i.e. not changing, try forcing a reload from the server - ctrl-f5 (pc) or opt-r (mac).

Thanks again, Callum, keep up the good work.

I was in the same physics class at Stanford as Bennett. Yesterday I was telling my son what an amazing fellow Bennett was, and then found this page. He was so helpful and friendly in my first year in the US. He was also fun and smart, a pleasure to be around. Very smart. One time around 1971, Bennett stopped a guy who was about to steal a LOT of expensive equipment. The thief came in looking official, was rolling stuff on a card to the truck, and everyone else assumed he was legit, with only Bennett having the smarts to ask the guy for his credentials. So sorry to read that he's gone.

Hello Callum,

I'm working on a website for a client and I am using your plugin. On my main contact form it works with no issues, I also have a quick contact form in my footer (its a widget). Looking at the source code for the widget, I noticed it was using the mail() function so I changed this to use the wp_mail() function instead as suggested above, but I still can't send any email from the quick contact form.

Any suggestions.

Regards,
Stephen
