Azureus (new window) is a BitTorrent client. Here are some quick tips to get the best performance out of Azureus.
Firstly, more is less, don’t be greedy. Don’t think you can download 10 torrents at once and not let anyone download from you, it simply won’t work. Other people will throttle you (electronically, not physically) so you’ll end up not being able to download anything. What does that mean? Read on…
To work out how many torrents you can run simultaneously, you need to know your outgoing connection speed. It is most likely 256Kbps, that’s typically how speeds are quoted, in kilobits. To use the information we need it in kilobytes per second, so divide the number by 8 to get 32KB/s.
You only want to make a maximum of 80% of your outgoing speed available for torrent use, so take 80% of that outgoing speed, and you most likely get 25.6KB/s.
To ensure you’re perceived as a good torrenter, you want to make sure that everyone who downloads from you gets a minimum speed of at least 2KB/s, so divide 80% of your outgoing speed by 2 to get 12.8. You can allow 12.8 simultaneous downloads from you, or seeing as you can’t allow 0.8 of a download, 12.
Now you need to decide how many torrents you’re going to allow. I’d recommend a maximum of 2 downloading at any one time, and a maximum of 3 torrents running. That means that one will be able to upload (let others download from you) after it has finished to keep the swarm alive. So you’ve got 12 so called upload slots, and 3 torrents to split them with, which equals a maximum of 4 upload slots per torrent.
So all of that meanson the Transfer page of the Options in Azureus, you need to set:
24KB/s global max upload
4 Default max upload slots per torrent
Then on the Queue page of the Options, set:
Max simultaneous downloads: 2
Max active torrents: 3
Leave the rest as default until you know what you’re doing with the options.
If you set Azereus up in this way you’ll find you get much better performance from Torrents in general. Running too many torrents at once will simply mean you wait an eternity for any of them to complete. This way means that you’ll have 2 running at any one time and get good performance from them. Enjoy…
