    Clickatell seem to be the premier SMS API, they're used by Pingdom, Cloudkick and PagerDuty. Incoming number (UK, regular number) is €100 setup and €25/month plus 1/3 credit per SMS received.
  2. http://api.orange.com/en/api/sms-api/cost
    Orange provide an SMS API using shared shortcodes / international UK number. Not sure what pricing is, complicated, but they are listed. Probably not a first choice.
  3. http://code.google.com/p/pygooglevoice/
    A python wrapper for the Google Voice API. Potentially allows the sending of SMS messages (or receipt of SMS messages) via Google Voice for free in the US and at GV costs overseas.

    UK based SMS provider, used by pingdom, no actual prices on their site, a bad sign. They appear to support receiving SMS but are probably horrendously expensive.
  5. http://bulksms.vsms.net/w/pricing.htm
    Pricing for BulkSms, an SMS gateway also used by pingdom.com. Charges 3 rates for delivery quality. Uncertain of whether they offer incoming numbers.

    An SMS api used by pingdom. Scandinavian country. Incoming UK number on Vodafone for €55/month + vat, unsure of per message cost.

    Very simple web monitoring system that checks if a site is online and sends alerts by SMS If down. They also offer a free monit aggregation service. Plans start £3/month basic, £5/month for 5 sites every 30 seconds plus 15 sms credits / month.

    A site that lists other sites which provide free SMS services. This is the UK page. Useful.

    Suite of tools to manage mobile phones or gsm modems. Includes an sms daemon among other things, and some gui stuff to manage it. The sms daemon connects to a MySQL / Postgres database natively.

    Developer APIs for placing calls and sending SMS messages. Handles both incoming and outgoing, but only sends texts in the US and only has incoming US / Canadian numbers.

    aql offer an email to SMS service and offer a link to nagios server monitoring.

    ipipi.com is an SMS gateway service. You can send messages online, via email, etc.

    TextMagic is a global sms delivery service. You can delivery texts via email, gateways, their own windows app, etc.
  16. http://groundcrew.us/
    Groundcrew is Joe Edelman's project around local, real time events / activities / missions for real people. It's coordinated using SMS / IM / etc. Currently in beta (Apr 2008).
